Increasing the capacity of Perth Airport

Built Environs is well underway in delivering the largest component of Perth Airport’s $750 million redevelopment— constructing the Domestic Pier and expanding the international departures area of Australia’s fourth busiest airport.

These works will increase Perth Airport’s capacity and deliver a significantly enhanced experience for international travellers in 2014.

Built Environs has been onsite at the Perth Airport since October 2012 to undertake early construction works for the new Domestic Pier, which will be located at the western end of the current International Terminal (T1).

The contemporary pier will introduce another 12 aerobridge gates, 14 check-in counters, and will see Virgin Australia move its domestic services to the international precinct in late 2014. The pier will also offer new check-in technology, a domestic passenger security screening zone, Virgin Australia premium guest lounge, baggage reclaim area and retail offerings—all accessible via a covered walkway for passengers transiting to and from the recently completed Terminal 2.

The expanded international departures area will significantly enhance the international travel experience for passengers by delivering an additional 16 check-in counters, two Airbus A380-capable aircraft gates, four aerobridges, three airline lounges and expanded retail offerings.

Passenger and staff safety is the utmost priority for the team, paying particular attention to the connection of the new structural steel to the existing structure of the 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week terminal.

Maintaining a sufficient level of service to travelers during the reconfiguration of the baggage handling system has also required meticulous planning and consideration.

Around-the-clock airport operations also demand sophisticated staging for the project team to manage the safe and efficient decanting of offices, check-in areas, wet areas, baggage handling zones, airport lounges and gates.

In managing the many challenges associated with the project, members of the Built Environs team are drawing upon their experience in delivering major airport developments and upgrades in Adelaide, Cairns, Dubai, Dublin, Hobart, Melbourne and Perth.

Built Environs has worked with the client to deliver numerous innovative solutions, including a revised external cladding system and use of building information modelling to coordinate all services, ensuring greater operational efficiency for the new airport precinct.

Remaining focused on delivering this fast-paced, high-quality expansion safely and with minimal impact to existing airport operations, Built Environs expects to handover the completed state-of-the-art facility to the client in 2014.
