Kangkanthi, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s new five-level Clinical Services Building, has transformed the delivery of emergency, critical, surgical and rehabilitation care across Adelaide’s western suburbs.
Delivered within a fully operational hospital precinct, the redevelopment brings together highly complex clinical environments, specialist medical equipment and future-ready infrastructure in Australia’s first all-electric major public healthcare building. Through collaborative planning, technical expertise and carefully managed delivery, the facility was completed on time without any unplanned disruption to existing hospital services.
Delivering within a live hospital
Construction was undertaken immediately adjacent to a fully operational hospital and included critical connections into existing infrastructure and refurbishment works within live clinical areas.
Every stage of the works was carefully planned to protect patients, staff and hospital services. Construction zones were fully separated, building services were isolated where required, and all works were completed under strict infection control protocols approved by SA Health’s Clinical Infection Control team.
Through careful planning and disciplined delivery, the project was completed without a single unplanned disruption to hospital operations.

Collaboration that delivered certainty
Working together from the earliest stages of the project allowed decisions to be made early and challenges to be resolved before construction began. Built Environs worked closely with the client, clinicians, consultants and trade partners throughout design development, procurement and delivery.
During the Part A phase, we identified a significant number of value management opportunities. Many were incorporated into the final design, helping establish the Guaranteed Construction Sum (GCS) while maintaining the project’s clinical intent and supporting delivery under budget.
BIM and detailed services coordination enabled thousands of kilometres of complex building services to be installed clash-free, improving productivity across TQEH’s new Clinical Services Building.
