Built Environs delivered major upgrades to Mount Alexander College and Flemington Primary School as part of the Flemington Education Plan, providing additional enrolment capacity and contemporary learning environments for Melbourne’s inner north-west.

The project included a new five-storey learning hub, canteen, outdoor learning spaces and infrastructure upgrades at Mount Alexander College, together with significant landscape and play space improvements at Flemington Primary School. Delivered within a live education environment, the works were carefully staged to minimise disruption while supporting the schools’ ongoing operations.

Designed for contemporary learning

The new learning hub brings together flexible teaching spaces, specialist learning areas and outdoor environments that support collaboration and student wellbeing.

From science laboratories and creative arts spaces to outdoor terraces, amphitheatres and rooftop recreation areas, every element was designed to create adaptable environments that respond to contemporary teaching and learning.

Building within a live school

Delivering a major redevelopment within an operational secondary school required detailed planning and close collaboration with the Victorian School Building Authority, school leadership and project stakeholders.

Construction was carefully staged around school activities, with access, safety and communication managed throughout the project to minimise disruption while maintaining day-to-day operations.

Smarter structural design

During tender, Built Environs identified an opportunity to redesign the structural solution by integrating the curved precast façade panels into the building’s structural system. Working closely with the design team, engineers and trade partners, the revised approach eliminated approximately 40 perimeter columns, creating larger, more flexible learning spaces while improving buildability, programme efficiency and delivering significant cost savings, all without compromising the architectural vision.
