Much needed expansion lifts capacity of Starship's PICU by 45 per cent
Starship Children’s Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is New Zealand’s only dedicated specialist paediatric intensive care facility, providing both national and regional services. The PICU expansion will lift capacity by 45%, benefiting whānau from right across New Zealand.
Built Environs successfully delivered the first phase of this major upgrade in February 2023 – 10 weeks ahead of schedule and completely defect-free. This stage added 10 new High Dependency Unit (HDU) beds and 4 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds, supporting the hospital’s growing demand for critical care.
The next phase, known as the Atrium Infill (currently underway) involves creating additional clinical spaces by infilling two levels of the existing atrium with a new steel and CLT (cross-laminated timber) structure. The works include structural and seismic upgrades, all delivered while the hospital remains fully operational – ensuring minimal disruption to vital medical services.
