Much needed expansion lifts capacity of Starship's PICU by 45 per cent

Starship Children’s Hospital’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is New Zealand’s only dedicated specialist paediatric intensive care facility, providing both national and regional services. The PICU expansion will lift capacity by 45%, benefiting whānau from right across New Zealand.

The project provides four additional ICU beds, 10 HDU beds, and empty spaces for future capacity, as well as the redevelopment of levels two and three of the atrium area to provide updated non-clinical spaces.

Works are split into three major separable portions: SP1 being the PICU beds expansion split over two stages (Stage 1A: HDU/Handover Room, Stage 2B: ICU/Work Room); SP2 being the Atrium ECI; and SP3 being the Atrium infill/redevelopment works. The Atrium works (SP2 ECI portion) involve significant portions of engineered timber within the structural framing (floors and roof) – a speciality of Built Environs.
