A heavily staged upgrade in a live forensic environment

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) Capital Works Upgrade was delivered to address a range of operational improvements identified through a review of the Institute’s 24-hour forensic facility in late 2020.

The completed works included construction of a new substation and backup generator facility, and the redevelopment of the Coronial Admission and Enquiries department with new staff offices, family viewing rooms and an improved visitor entry. The upgrade also strengthened the facility’s capability for infectious disease management, alongside reconfigured internal spaces to accommodate new offices and imaging areas.

The project also delivered critical imaging upgrades, including the procurement and installation of new equipment such as a CT scanner and MRI.

Given the facility remained fully operational throughout the works, delivery was carefully planned in close collaboration with the client. The staged program was structured into nine Separable Portions, enabling multiple work fronts to progress while maintaining uninterrupted service delivery and minimising disruption.
