Flinders Medical Centre’s largest-ever expansion will significantly increase healthcare capacity for communities across Adelaide’s southern suburbs.
Expanding critical healthcare services
The new Acute Services Building will deliver 98 additional clinical spaces across more than 17,000m² of new construction, supported by a further 3,000m² of refurbished space.
The expansion includes an 18-bay Medical Day Unit, four operating theatres and recovery areas, a dedicated Eye Surgery Clinic, a 16-bed Intensive Care Unit with CT scanner suite, two 32-bed Adult Inpatient Units and a new Podiatry department.
More than $20 million is being invested in major medical equipment, supporting the delivery of expanded and improved clinical services.
Building around a working hospital
Delivering a major expansion within a fully operational hospital requires careful staging and coordination. Critical hospital services are being progressively diverted and integrated while maintaining continuity of care and avoiding unplanned outages.
With limited space across the site, our team is using just-in-time deliveries and prefabrication to reduce congestion and minimise disruption to hospital operations.
Designing with the people who will use it
VR-enabled design sessions allow clinicians and end users to experience and test spaces before they are built, helping validate layouts, improve functionality and reduce design changes during construction.
The redevelopment also incorporates all-electric systems and low-carbon materials to support its sustainability objectives.
Early works commenced in late 2024, with the new Acute Services Building expected to open in 2028.
