A game-changer for Auckland's public transport

Built Environs and McConnell Dowell, in joint venture, have successfully delivered the Puhinui Station Interchange. The interchange is key to the Southwest Gateway programme and improving public transport connections between Auckland Airport and the CBD, paving the way for more sustainable transport modes.

The project saw part of the existing footbridge demolished and a new multimodal interchange constructed. This included an at-grade bus area, drop-off zones, cycle facilities, lighting and CCTV, and landscaping. There’s also a concourse with stairs, lifts, escalators, a HOP gateline, staff and retail facilities.

This project is a great example of the two businesses working together to provide customers with a multi-discipline design and construction service with a single, seamless management interface and delivery team.

Creative Construction

Our temporary works team designed an innovative ‘rail protection deck’ – a structure that created a physical barrier between construction materials, plant operations, the rail corridor and its electrified assets.

This was the first time such a structure had been proposed for use on a rail construction project in New Zealand.

To ensure the protection deck met requirements, the team worked closely with KiwiRail and Auckland Transport to review design clearances, structural capacity, and integrity. The deck underwent several design and safety reviews, showcasing the team’s collaborative approach to solution development.

With the rail protection deck in place, the team was able to safely transport materials across the train tracks without having to shut down the train line.

Additionally, work could continue during the day without night or weekend works, resulting in minimal disruption for local residents.
