Reducing waste and carbon emissions - contributing to a greener, healthier city

Built Environs is leading the construction of the main process building for the McConnell Dowell and HEB Construction joint venture.

This world-class facility, the first of its kind in Aotearoa, aims to significantly reduce sewage sludge produced during wastewater treatment, transforming it into a safe, reusable product. This innovative approach will cut down carbon emissions and minimise waste to landfill.

The facility will achieve up to an 80 percent annual reduction in sludge volume by converting it into a stable, dry, and odourless product. This product can be easily transported and used in productive ways, such as a soil conditioner or fuel for industrial heat.

The Wellington region will gain substantial benefits from this facility, including a significant reduction in waste and carbon emissions, cleaner waterways, and a reduced carbon footprint.

Fast Facts:

  • The process building has four-levels, but its height of 26 metres is comparable to an eight-storey apartment block
  • The Buckling Restraint Braces (BRBs) are designed to withstand 5000kN (500tonnes) of lateral force
  • The facility will reduce emissions from sludge treatment and processing by up to 60 percent
  • The sludge will help power the treatment process – as it breaks down, it produces biogas that is captured and used to generate heat and electricity to help run the process
